Burglary Victim

Hello everyone!

This has definitely been a hard week for us. Our house was broken into by three male teenagers.

If you read my first post, you must know that we just bought this house in September 2015. We did not have a security system, because we are laid back people and honestly, didn’t think we needed it.

My husband works for Verizon and he sells the Canary Cameras. He bought one about a month ago because it had good reviews, plus 30% employee discount. The camera is very easy to use, all you need is to download the app and to follow the steps.

The camera was working pretty well; I caught my husband getting my birthday present and not doing the chores he was supposed to be doing on his days off.

This past Monday at 11:16 am, I was sitting at my desk at work, when got the app notification saying that there was activity inside the house. My husband wasn’t there so I was curious to see what or who was inside. I tapped in the app…it took a few seconds to load (longest seconds of my life) and finally I saw the three guys coming in through the kitchen window and already inside my house. I freaked out and pressed the alarm button built-in inside the camera, then called the police. I should have done the opposite, but I just wanted the guys out of my house. I also was not sure about the police response time; I knew it would have taken 3-10 minutes to get to my house.

I came to a complete mess in the bedrooms. Luckily, only an iPad was stolen. The police has the video that was recorded with the Canary Camera and one of the three suspects has been caught. You can see the video HERE. The other two are still on the run.

Now, after a few days I have calmed down. We have installed the proper security system. We installed cameras outside and more in the inside, sensors in all windows and doors, motion detector, glass breakers, motion sensor solar outdoor lights, we have locked all the gates, etc. Maybe the only thing that is left to do is to have three protective dogs sitting on my front and back porch waiting for some fresh meat.

I hope the this sense of insecurity disappears soon. The feeling left after being a victim of burglary is hard to explain. I don’t feel safe anymore, constantly look through doors and windows, can stay home alone,  and I am always think someone is going to come to attack me.

What has helped tremendously is the amount if nice comments I saw on the video. Plenty of people were complimenting the decor and that is really an honor. I also found a great group on Facebook, called Fixer Upper Show Followers; it is the most amazing group I have seen so far. It is full of talented and supportive people. I love these kind of groups because it allows me to connect with people who are interested in the same things I am.

I just wanted to share my story with you. It might help you, or might not.

Love you all! Thanks for your love and support.

  1. Our home had been broken into twice. Last December they kicked the front door in at 11 in the morning. I don’t know that you ever fully recover. You do adapt to your new normal. I hide the laptop, etc before leaving the house and always set the alarm.

    1. Thank you. I have been feeling better and can stay home alone. Although I look though the windows a lot. We got the alarm system installed and I even set it up when I am home.
